Students certainly look to faculty for information and connections in
many career fields. Employers frequently form relationships with
faculty that result in requests for assistance in identifying qualified
potential employees. Faculty have historically served important roles
as references.
However, a faculty member who frequently refers students for employment
may be at risk if a failure to comply with Equal Opportunity and Affirmative
Action regulations can be proven. The Career Services Network subscribes to the Principles
of Professional Conduct, established by the National Association of
Colleges and Employers (NACE), to guide
career services professionals, employer representatives, and third-party
recruiters. NACE also provides A
Faculty Guide to Ethical and Legal Standards in Student Hiring. Network members
would be happy to answer faculty questions regarding these guidelines.
We would naturally appreciate the chance to work with faculty to bring
employers to our campus, or to ease their consideration of our students
in other ways as well. Faculty should check the sections of this
site that are aimed at employers, both to understand the scope of CSN activities
and to identify Network members involved with employer assistance.
Questions and comments are welcomed by Mike
Cahill, Director of the Center for Career Services, and by Debi
Walker, Assistant Director for Recruitment Services.
