Mission: To assist students from all programs within the Newhouse School of Public Communications to understand and pursue career options in communications. This mission encompasses the preparation of these students for the search and selection processes of the communications industries, and the building of relationships with communications employers.

Populations served: Undergraduate and graduate students from Newhouse programs of study. Students of other programs at Syracuse may use resources once they complete certain pre- requisite activities.

Services/Resources:

SKILLS TRAINING

Four seminars are offered multiple times each semester:

  • "Finding An Internship" - 45 minutes with tour of CDC resources
  • "Resumes/Letters for Internships" - one hour on letters/resumes for internships
  • "Job Hunt Seminar Series" - three hours on organizing a proactive job search based on a networking model (three separate seminars attended individually or all at once)
  • "Interview Etiquette" - one hour on job interview preparation and basics

FINDING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE COMMUNICATIONS INDUSTRY

  • Communications Internship Fair - September
  • Communications Career Day - November
  • CNY Communications Consortium - April recruiting event
  • Various speakers and recruiter information sessions

RESOURCES

  • Career guides - describe the wide variety of jobs in the communications industry
  • Industry trade magazines - keep students up-to-date on communication trends and developments
  • Industry directories - list communications companies and agencies for reference
  • NACAN alumni database - over 2,100 alumni who've agreed to serve as career contacts (requires Job Hunt Seminar attendance for seniors & grad students)
  • Internship database - over 900 national internships in all communications fields

GUIDANCE

Individual appointments are available with CDC staff Monday-Friday to discuss the job/internship hunt, major or college changes, resume/letter reviews, interview skills, networking skills, etc.
