Populations served: The Office of Supportive Services serves approximately 350 students enrolled in all schools and colleges at Syracuse University through the New York State grant funded Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) and the federally funded Student Support Services Program (SSSP). The office also administers the SummerStart program, a six-week summer program for incoming students designed to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college (students live in the residence halls, take classes(up to 9 credits), attend their college's Preview weekend, and take part in orientation and recreation activities.) HEOP seeks to identify, recruit, enroll, and retain students who are historically under represented at SU. SSSP supports low-income, first generation college students. Academic Counselors in the Office of Supportive Services work with a case-load of approximately 50-55 students each.

Services/Programs:

  • Summer Start: over the summer students are introduced to (and registered with) the Center for Career Services through and interactive workshop and tour. Counselors meet regularly with students and discuss individually their career goals, development, exploration, etc.
  • Academic Year: students continue to meet regularly with their counselors. Students' career development is discussed and related activities are recorded on the situational assessment to discuss career development among other issues. Counselors encourage students to utilize resources on campus, in Syracuse community and at home. OSS Advisory Board (compromised of 15 students) is developing a peer mentoring program to link successful upperclassmen with freshman and sophomores.
  • OSS Career Bulletin Board: post job opps sent directly to our office, Center for Career Services weekly newsletter and other career related materials.
